The pearls are not physically strong. She could pull them apart, break the string with a tug of her delicate wrists. But they are an emotionally bond. Like a banknote that has no real inherent value, just a pretty piece of paper in which we have faith, the pearls are an object of faith as well.
Faith that I will never leave her, will never let harm come to her, faith that she will obey my every command, faith that no matter how many welts and bruises and bites I subjected her to I will wash and dress and kiss each one better. The pearls are a symbol of commitment, more powerful than any chain or gold wedding band.
